Last summer I started experiencing issues when working on CPU bound tasks on my laptop. It turned out that stock thermal grease became rock solid and was no longer able to do its work. The fan was also full of dirt. The sad fact is that you cannot open fan case without removing the whole cooling system. That was a big win. After two weeks I decided to try to make air flow inside the laptop more streamlined.

First thing I did - closed the hole in motherboard with a piece of thick paper. The idea was to minimize the amount of hot air going under my keyboard which sometimes was making it too hot to work with it normally.

I just glued the pieces of linoleum to the laptop case and made something that looks like a well. Not much but still better than nothing.

Replacement of the thermal grease and cleaning of the fan from dust is a must if you want to fix the overheating issues. Attempts to improve the air intake could also help to lower the temperature but not much. Friendly tip: print pages with necessary steps as it is hard to remember everything when disassembling laptop for the first time.

Step 2: Fix the airflow inside the cooling system After two weeks I decided to try to make air flow inside the laptop more streamlined. Secondly I decided to fix the air intake. Conslusions Replacement of the thermal grease and cleaning of the fan from dust is a must if you want to fix the overheating issues. Anyways you will not lose anything from trying to make things better.

Good luck! Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus. Thanks in advance. The thermistor is a temperature sensor. Replace the system fan - that should solve the problem. Fun pass diagnosis check without problemsmy problem is with the ambient thermistor it's not signaling to the fan in order to start before reaching critical temperature.

The thermistor is usually part of the fan assembly. Hopefully that's the one that failed - and if so it's an easy, inexpensive replacement. If the problem persists after the fan assembly is replaced, one of the other sensors likely failed - meaning the mainboard would need to be replaced.

However, depending on the specific server model and the version of OpenManage that is installed these results can vary widely.

For instance, when you walk the table you will get different results for servers with a different number of CPUs or Cores. This will change again if hyperthreading is enabled. Also, some Dell servers do not have the Planar, Riser or Ambient probes meaning we will not get those results. Additionally, on advanced servers there are probes for the RAID arrays and others.

The sensor labels are available if I manually crawl the Dell table and then match up the index values one value at a time. A two week job at least for an intern. Additionally I'd like that all found temps be plotted on the same graph just like WMI CPU and Disk graphs and finally a check box or formula we can apply to convert temps from one scale to another without having to create an additional factory sensor.

Don't worry I checked out the speck before changing the memory, however I now get a message when I start up the computer that it cannot detect the air sensor or the front panel?? Joined Dec 5, Messages 1, Check out the following link and skip to Issue 5. I learned a little lesson Im a rookie at computers unplugging the computer and draining the remaining power out seemed to solve the problem. I didn't find any unconnected wires but when I got it back together it worked great. As Seen On.I have a dell optiplex desktop machine not a small form factor.

It started making a very loud fan type noise a couple of days ago I do not know if they are related. No changes were made to the made to the machine prior to these alerts showing up. I replaced the battery on the motherboard, which fixed the battery issue When the alert comes up I can press F1 to continue and it will load into windows Dell fans typically have a sensor built into them. So it sounds like that sensor may have failed.

A number of vendors sell Dell OEM parts, so check around on the net for the fan. If you can't find one, call Dell Spare Parts. Note: If you replace the fan with a non-Dell fan, you'll still get a fan failure error at every boot. And keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't overheat. The fan with the sensor is the large one near the CPU right?

It forces air over the massive heat sync on top of the CPU. The fan itself is still working I mean a working fan with no temp sensor. I don't know how this model handles the fan if the sensor fails. Without the sensor, the fan either may run continuously at full speed probably not a problem, except perhaps for noiseor it may not speed up when things get hot.

You might want to disconnect the fan cable from the motherboard and then reconnect it, in case it's just a loose connection. If you're still under warranty, contact Dell Tech Support for a replacement fan. If not under warranty, you'll have to decide whether to live with the error message or get a replacement Dell fan.

Hi, I have the exact same issue Alert! Air temperature sensor not detectedit came up just after this weekend, when I cleaned the inside of my pc. I guess the only thing that will solve this is placing a new original Dell fan with temperature sensor in the machine. How to I obtain a new used but still working is also OK Dell fan for my machine? I have a Dell Optiplex There is no need to turn it on or off or to configure any settings. The sensor comes configured for optimal running configurations no matter what climate you use your computer in.

Dell is notoriously infamous for selling adapters that tend to go bad after few years of heavy usage. You can read about why this issue occurs here. Also, they will not allow you to charge your battery if this message pops up, for no reason but to force you into buying a new adapter. Since this is expensive business and all three of my dead and dying adapters work perfectly fine as far as the voltages required for operation are concerned, I was desperately searching for a software bypass to somehow allow frequency scaling on my CPU and work on reasonable speeds.

Finally, I stumbled upon this beautiful solution to bypass this limit dell forces upon me. So just add this line to grub. Alternately, you can use rmclock[gui] on windows to achieve the same.

BTW the youngest self made billionaire of his time, selling chargers and batteries is chump change for him.

Wow, All these work arounds has anyone given a thought to why they have done this? The reason that Dell do this is to limit the current consumption on the power supply and so the laptop does not to cause the power supply to fry. Similar kind of things happens now with USB chargers for tablets. Works fine though. My N was anemic thru all last year, but I was so sure it might be some bloatware programs, fat updates, laggy windows or whatever you would like, so I disabled services startups.

Yes ThrottleStop helped instantly and returned me 2,9 Ghz. But not so with batteries charging. So there should be better way return it back to life. So problem was inside laptops DC part.

I am on windows 7 and have a dell laptop. Can you explain me how to do it on my system? The middle pin is connected to the AC Adapter Identification wire, the other pin to V- of the power plug. The 3rd wire is not connected. Pretty strange for a transistor, where all 3 pins are usually all connected. Not the typical markings on a transistor. The difference is the size of the memory. The DS seems to be byte memory.

Pretty nifty solution — however, it proved to be a vulnerable one, with many victims. Fix is only to prevent the throttling. Only a new power adapter will recharge the battery. My crappy Anker only last a few months before I started getting the Unrecognized error.
